Café du Livre, Best Summer escape in Marrakech
Café du Livre is a restaurant and bookstore hidden away from the heat and chaos of the city in an old-fashioned patio in the heart of the colonial French quarter. It is a crossroads for residents and travellers alike – restaurant, café, lounge and bookstore, with the atmosphere of a small private club.
The food served in the 35-seat restaurant is home-cooked, international and served non-stop. The décor is elegant, the atmosphere unpretentious. Journalists read the newspapers or work over the Internet via our free WIFI connection. Designers search for ideas in the extensive permanent book collection on Morocco. Writers and readers browse through a bookstore of over 2000 books while local personalities make the most of a day with breakfast in the morning, extended meals at noon, tapas or tea in the afternoon or a glass of wine or draft beer with sushis as an aperitif and maybe a light salad or soup as an early dinner.
The open fireplace is highly appreciated in winter, as is the cool breeze of the air-conditioner in summer…
The Food served non-stop at Café du Livre has gone through several stages of perfection. From homemade hearty dishes just after opening to a very sophisticated menu implemented by two star Michelin Chef Richard Neat. It has now settled in what is going to be the standard Café du Livre fare to satisfy most clients’ wishes: fresh Salads, good Soups, a traditional Cheeseburger with perfect French fries, main dishes like oven baked Camembert or a nice Entrecote or garlic flavoured chicken and delicious freshly baked Cakes. There is a daily special that tends to change with the seasons and our early dinner crowd will not be disappointed by the choice they have in Tapas accompanying a glass of wine or a draft beer.
Regular clients asked for a choice of small or big Brunch-style Breakfasts, we serve it now throughout the day.
The Café du Livre’s bookstore has over 2000 fiction and non-fiction titles in English, as well as hundreds of books in other languages, including French, Spanish, German and Dutch. From used copies of the best novels to the most talked about new releases, it’s hard to come away empty-handed. Clients are also welcome to curl up in one of our bookstore café armchairs with a book and a hot chocolate, a piece of cake or maybe one of our delicious multi-vitamin juices. Also available to clients are free WIFI and a bulletin board where they can find job postings, apartment rentals and upcoming events in Marrakesh.
The bookstore also includes a large permanent collection of books on Morocco, or by Moroccan authors. Novels, photography, poetry, folk tales, politics, architecture, design, as well as local guides, magazines and international newspapers in several languages.
Private readings and book signings are scheduled whenever the opportunity arises.
